As the business session began today (Monday), there was a larger crowd, but definitely a more somber atmosphere in Section 139 of the stadium — the seating space reserved for Mountain Sky Conference people. Overnight the significance of the failure of the One Church Plan to be ranked as a high priority by a majority was more evident. Although Monday’s “legislative committee” session was still a prelude to a final vote in the Tuesday plenary session, it was unlikely that there would be a significant shift of votes toward the One Church Plan. That concern was well-founded.
Sunday began General Conference 2019 with worship led by Rev. Ken Carter, Presiding Bishop of the Council of Bishops. Embracing a collegial approach to UMC episcopal leadership, Bishop Carter and the Council of Bishops agreed to share the presiding role among the council members so throughout the day, sessions we were led by leaders from around the globe, reminding us of our great diversity.
