Serving Denver’s Homeless
Nelson Ministries is a Broomfield-based non-profit organization which distributes clothing, bedding, personal care items, food and other items to hundreds of Denver homeless. We go downtown every Saturday late afternoon.
We gratefully accept donations of any of the following items for this ministry:
- (New or used) men’s clothing - JEANS (I’ll repair rips), sweatshirts (especially hooded ones), athletic and dress shoes. hiking boots, work boots, underwear, tube socks, flip-flops (for shower use) T-shirts, work gloves, caps, jackets, etc. We also need ties and dress shirts, dress pants and suits for the gentlemen at the treatment center.
- BLANKETS, pillows, mattress pads, TOWELS and washcloths, backpacks and totes, small tarps and sleeping bags
- Small (travel size) SHAMPOO, soap, conditioner and lotion, toothpaste and toothbrushes, deodorant, disposable razors, combs. Flashlights, candles, umbrellas and small radios also appreciated.
We go to the “triangle” at Broadway/Lawrence/24th Street every Saturday evening at 3:30pm, feeding a little before 4:00pm (a Bible study group arrives an hour earlier) and bring donated Panera Bread to serve with the Korean Church’s noodle dish and usually lots of other food and beverages. We bring clothing, shoes and blankets to give out as well. Other drivers and people to help with the food distribution would be greatly appreciated.
Our BIG deliveries (with new underwear, pants, toiletries and hoodies in additional to the “regular” clothing we always bring) are on the first and third Saturday afternoons, loading at 3:15pm and leaving our home in Broomfield by 3:30pm. We distribute at the above-mentioned “triangle” and then some go at 4:30pm to the Salvation Army’s Harbor Light Center (a 4-month to one-year alcohol and substance abuse program) bringing bedding, suits and other clothing and shoes, with both places being done at 5:30pm. Lots of drivers and helpers needed these nights.
We are always in need of people to help gather and sort items, size and label shoes and pants, help in making or tying quilts, and in the handing out of food, bread and clothing, etc. on Saturday evenings! We can sign papers for community service.
I am also in need of people to help cook up meals for the homeless -- especially on the first and third Saturdays at 10:00am for a few hours at the United Methodist Church in Broomfield -- sometimes on the other Saturdays as well -- depending on what we’re serving that night.
If you have items you would like to donate or time to help with our other needs, or have questions about this ministry, please email: firstname.lastname@example.org
